Biografia

Leonilde Bonfrate is Associate Professor of Internal Medicine (SSD MED/09) at Università Telematica San Raffaele Roma. Her clinical and research activity is primarily focused on obesity and metabolic associated disorders, including metabolic syndrome, MASLD/MASH, dyslipidaemia and cardiometabolic risk in polymorbid internal medicine patients. In close connection with this, she has a strong interest in clinical nutrition, particularly in how nutritional assessment and tailored dietary interventions can modify the course and outcomes of metabolic and chronic diseases. She holds an MD and a Residency in Internal Medicine from the University of Bari, and a PhD in Soil and Food Sciences with a thesis on nutrition and metabolic-liver disorders.

She has authored more than 90 full papers in peer-reviewed journals, with an H-index of 34 and over 4,700 citations (Scopus). Her publications cover obesity pharmacotherapy, metabolic and bariatric aspects of care, diet–microbiota–host interactions, gallstone disease, type 2 diabetes and cardiometabolic risk, as well as clinical nutrition in health and disease, intestinal neoplasia, rare autoinflammatory conditions and thyroid disorders. A significant part of her work is devoted to developing and evaluating integrated strategies for obesity and metabolic disorders within internal medicine, including screening for malnutrition and obesity, assessment of body composition and visceral adiposity, and management of diet-related symptoms such as malabsorption and food intolerances.

Her methodological expertise includes diagnostic, interventional and functional ultrasonography, breath tests for food intolerances and Helicobacter pylori infection, liver function tests using stable isotopes, assessment of intestinal permeability, and anthropometric and bioimpedance techniques to characterise body composition and visceral fat distribution. She is actively involved in teaching Internal Medicine and Clinical Nutrition in degree and postgraduate programmes, and regularly supervises theses on obesity, clinical nutrition and gut–liver–microbiota interactions. She is a member of SIMI, SISA, EFIM, ESCI and AME, serves as Councillor of ESCI and President of the ESCI Journal Foundation, and is Section Editor of the European Journal of Clinical Investigation and Associate Editor of Internal and Emergency Medicine.
