Thomas Alessandro Ciarfuglia
RttBiografia
I am a Rtt at Università San Raffaele of Rome. From 2021 to 2025 he was RTD-A at Sapienza University of Rome, where he is affiliated with the Department of Computer, Control and Management Engineering “Antonio Ruberti”. He holds a Ph.D. in Robotics from the University of Perugia, which he completed in 2011, and has been working as a PostDoc at the Service and Industrial Robotics and Automation Laboratory (SIRALab) since 2008.
My research focuses on artificial intelligence, robotics, computer vision, and machine learning, with specific expertise in mobile robot navigation, simultaneous localization and mapping (SLAM), and precision agriculture. I've contributed to numerous publications in areas such as monocular visual odometry, deep learning for agricultural robotics, and natural language video description. I have also experience in related to data-driven approaches for synthetic aperture radar (SAR) imaging and processing, as well as hyperspectral and multispectral fruit sugar content estimation for robot harvesting operations.
I led the Sapienza group in the EU H2020 project CANOPIES about human robot interaction in farming environments. In particular I was respondible for the critical Work Package related to field testing and final demo of the project. In addition, I was Sapienza's Principal Ivestigator for the Digital Twin City project funded by Lazio Innova s.r.l.
My teaching activity is currently focused on Computer Vision and Internet of Things, but I thought other courses such as Machine Learning (9CFU, University of Perugia), Laboratorio di Intelligenza Artificiale, Intelligenza Artificiale 2 (6CFU, Sapienza University of Rome) and PhD courses on Visual Odometry and Scientific Method.
