This course offers an exploration of English as a global language, the foundations of human communication and translation as theory and practice. The course is structured as follows:

- Historical development of English and the factors that contributed to its global spread; its cultural roots, media influence, and the international issues linked to its dominance

The rise of New Englishes and the role of English as a contemporary lingua franca.

- Communication studies: nature of communication, written and oral modes, and the interplay between verbal, non-verbal in multimodal communication.

Communication in personal, professional, institutional, and international settings, with particular attention to practices within the European Union.

- Key principles in translation studies: theories and practical insights into the translation process; translating different products in different contexts. Translation strategies and processes.
